Think NEXUS

 Newsletter #1 | May 2019

A Welcome to Think NEXUS
Fabrice Clari (inno TSD) -
Project Coordinator

The Internet is ubiquitous in our daily activities – at home, while commuting, at the office… Being key to almost any socio-economic activity and with the objective to shape its future, the European Commission launched in 2016 the Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative as part of the Digital Single Market. The NGI initiative fosters the vision that “The Internet of the future should be more open, provide better services, more intelligence, greater involvement and participation. It needs to reflect the European social and ethical values: free, open and more interoperable”. While this statement puts the NGI in a European perspective, it is of high importance to see the NGI as a worldwide topic, through the creation of synergies with other countries being big players in the Internet ecosystems. In such context, the Think NEXUS project aims at creating synergies with similar initiatives in the United States of America.

As project coordinator, I am very happy to present our first newsletter. Its main objective is to keep you informed on Think NEXUS activities – past and future. As per today, follow us (through Twitter, LinkedIn…) to be part of a community that connects EU/US Future Internet actors.

Upcoming Activities

Think NEXUS first workshop

Washington DC, USA | July 10th, 2019

Think NEXUS is organising its first Workshop on July 10th in Washington DC, USA. During the Workshop, the three project Expert Groups will have their first round of face-to-face discussions on EU-US collaboration on NGI topics. The outputs of the Workshop will be fed into the future EU/US roadmap for NGI.

The Workshop will be organised under the scope of the Global City Teams Challenge – Smart and Secure Cities and Communities Challenge (GCTC-SC3) – Expo, which is co-hosted by US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the US Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T), and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

Get to know NGI!

The Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative, launched by the European Commission in the autumn of 2016, aims to shape the future internet as an interoperable platform ecosystem that embodies the values that Europe holds dear: openness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy, cooperation, and protection of data. The NGI will drive this technological revolution and ensure the progressive adoption of advanced concepts and methodologies spanning the domains of artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, interactive technologies and more, while contributing to making the future internet more human-centric.

This ambitious vision requires the involvement of the best Internet researchers and innovators to address technological opportunities arising from cross-links and advances in research fields ranging from network infrastructures to platforms, and application domains to social innovation.

Get involved! Fill in Think NEXUS Survey

Think NEXUS is conducting an online survey to gain an understanding of the NGI community’s views on EU-US collaboration. The survey asks for the community’s views in respect to NGI-related topics, such as: Science and Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Policy.

Besides providing Think NEXUS and the NGI as a whole with valuable insights on EU-US collaboration, the results will be analysed and acted on within Think NEXUS’ Expert Group discussions with the aim of identifying priorities for EU-US collaboration on NGI-related topics.

The survey does not collect any personal information. Individual responses will be kept absolutely confidential. The results of the survey will only be used for Think NEXUS purposes.

Project Kick-off Meeting

Think NEXUS project was launched in Sophia Antipolis (France) in November 2018. The kick-off meeting was organised by the consortium leader, inno TSD, and included the participation of project partners from different EU countries.

During the kick off meeting, Work Package leaders presented the activities to be implemented and received inputs and feedback from the other partners. Moreover, the strategies for the Think Tank were presented, discussed and agreed upon.

The meeting included a Lego® Serious Play® Workshop organised by inno TSD, during which partners had the opportunity to share and discuss their visions about the different spheres of the project. This workshop also represented an important team building experience.

Overall, the Think NEXUS’ kick-off meeting allowed partners to exchange knowledge and experiences, share their individual expectations towards the project, and strengthen cooperation in order to build a strong team spirit.
